About the Canadian Federation of University Women

The industrial expansion that occurred after the beginning of the First World War opened up many opportunities for women. In 1917 some women had the right to vote in Ontario and as of Jan. 1, 1919, some women over 21 had the right to vote in a federal election.

It was in August 1919 that Canadian Federation of University Women was formed when representatives for the University Women’s Clubs of Canada met in Winnipeg to organize a national federation so that Canada might become one of the first countries to join in the emerging International Federation of University Women.

Our local CFUW Orillia was chartered in 1955 as a non-profit organization that is active in public affairs, working to raise the social, economic and legal status of women as well as to improve education, the environment, and human rights.

CFUW Orillia raises funds through its annual Homes Tour to provide post-secondary scholarships to female graduates of Orillia secondary schools, including the Learning Centre.

Membership is offered to all women who believe in our goals and value lifelong learning. For more information visit the website.
