Mariposa Arts Theatre’s (MAT) Film Nights is pleased to present the delightful action comedy film Thelma on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Orillia Galaxy Cinemas for two screenings, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
When 93-year-old Thelma Post is duped of $10,000 by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, she sets out on a quest across the city to reclaim what was taken from her. Inspired by director Josh Margolin’s real-life experience with his grandmother, Thelma puts a clever, hilarious spin on the action film genre with an ordinary grandmother as an unlikely action hero. With the help of her children, friends, and devoted grandson, Thelma warms hearts as she navigates the perils of Los Angeles in search of her money.
Playing the role of Thelma is June Squibb, whose career began on Broadway in 1958. After decades as an actress in theatre, television and film, in 2024, 94-year-old Squibb was given her first leading role. Squibb portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination. Critics agree that she is a total delight. Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times says, “She delivers a knockout of a performance.”
Since 1996, MAT’S Film Nights has been bringing outstanding films to Orillia audiences through its connection with the Toronto International Film Festival. The 300 films screened so far have included dramas, comedies, adventures, and documentaries from Canada, the U.S.A., the U.K. and dozens of countries around the world.
