MARIPOSA HOUSE HOSPICE

It is with great pride and gratitude that the Mariposa House Hospice team announces that Dr. Si Lowry, inaugural president of the board of directors (first co-chair with Dr. Erika Catford from 2017-21 and then chair and president from 2021-22) has passed the baton to Dave Carson.
Lowry has been a tireless advocate for residential hospice care in the Couchiching area for many years. He has given countless presentations to raise awareness and funds so that the vision of Mariposa House Hospice could become a reality. We are so grateful for his past contributions and ongoing commitment to our organization.
“It has been an honour and privilege to serve my community and help to make residential hospice care available to everyone in this area,” commented Lowry. “Dave Carson has been a fantastic stalwart supporter of Mariposa House Hospice and I am thrilled to have him assume the role as president and chair of the board.”
Lowry will continue as past president until 2023, at which point he will retire from the board.
Mariposa House Hospice is a charitable organization that operates a five-bed hospice residence to provide quality end-of-life palliative care with compassion, dignity and respect in a peaceful, homelike setting while welcoming and supporting family and friends. The team of staff and volunteers has cared for over 150 individuals since opening in February 2021.
“Our community is blessed that two local doctors, even with their busy schedules, stepped up and pushed to ensure Mariposa became reality. I want to acknowledge and thank Dr. Si Lowry and Dr. Erika Catford (who is now medical director) for their years of service and for their continued involvement in different roles,” shared Carson. “Through my years in funeral service, I have served many families who would have benefited from the type of care that Mariposa House Hospice offers, including the opportunity for loved ones to focus on spending precious time together without focusing on the role of caregiver. I am excited to be assuming the role of chair of the board of directors for this important community resource.”
The board of directors is responsible for governance and oversight of the organization including financial sustainability and risk management. The board is currently made up of seven volunteers who take on various roles and work on different committees to ensure the organization meets all its obligations. Without these integral volunteers, an organization like Mariposa House Hospice could not exist.
