A multi-vehicle accident shut down the southbound lanes of Highway 400 between Duckworth Street and Bayfield Street in Barrie on Thursday, August 2, 2018. Kevin Lamb for BarrieToday.

A medical issue was the catalyst that started the chain of events resulting in a four-vehicle collision on Highway 400 between Duckworth and Bayfield Streets on Thursday at about 5:30 p.m.

“The tow truck driver had a medical issue, which initiated the collision,” said OPP Const. Lauren Ball when reached for an interview on Friday morning.

“We’re not doctors, so we can’t say definitely what that medical issue was,” she said.

Ball indicated that the tow truck driver then lost control, struck a pick-up truck which then swerved into another lane, hitting a third and then fourth vehicle.

The OPP’s Traffic Support Unit was on the scene on Thursday night doing a reconstruction of events.

“It will take a couple of days to get the results of the (reconstruction),” said Ball.

No charges have been laid and won’t be until the investigation has been completed, she added.

Three people were taken to hospital as a result of the collision, all with non-life-threatening injuries. Ball did not have an update on Friday morning of their condition.

Highway 400 was fully reopened on Friday morning by 1 a.m.
