The Orillia Silver Band is teaming up with the Orillia Vocal Ensemble to present a fundraiser concert in support of the Green Haven Shelter for Women.

Our Safety and Shelter Concert takes place on Sunday, March 24, 2024, 2 p.m. at the St. Paul’s Centre in Orillia. Concert tickets are available from the Orillia Silver Band website and at the door. Proceeds from the concert will go to the Green Haven Shelter for Women in Orillia.

The Green Haven Shelter for Women offers a much-needed service to the community by providing safety, shelter, and meaningful alternatives for individuals who experience gender-based violence. The organization works to create a foundation for change and opportunities for the future for such individuals. See more online.

The concert is a life-affirming collection of instrumental and vocal music offered by the Orillia Vocal Ensemble under the direction of Blair Bailey and the Orillia Silver Band led by Neil Barlow.

On the program, the choir will perform a beautiful collection of Three Afro-American Spirituals – including Good News, Steal Away and Rise and Shine.

Selections by the band include a classic march, The Old Seventeenth by E.A.Y. Jones, as well as one of our very own commissioned works, Mariposa Sketches – inspired by the stories of Orillia’s own Stephen Leacock – from the pen of Canadian composer Len Ballantine. We will feature our tenor horn soloist, Rita Arendz on the hauntingly beautiful folk song The Lark in the Clear Air, arranged by Gordon Langford.

Also included on the program is a gorgeous setting of Eric Whitacre's October arranged by Philip Sparke, and the fiery and exciting Glorifico Aeternum by Dean Jones.

The choir and band will combine forces for Oscar Peterson's Hymn to Freedom, the lovely Song for the Mira, and a selection of tunes from Lloyd-Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!

Please don’t miss this entertaining afternoon in support of women in our community!
