Orillians will soon have another option for Mexican food.

Guac Mexi Grill is set to open at 975 West Ridge Blvd., in the Food Basics plaza, at the end of July.

“Orillia is a nice town and that area is growing a lot. With the highways, so many people stop in. It’s easy to catch people’s eyes,” said Trushna Makadia, founder of Guac Mexi Grill.

She opened her first location in Brantford in 2016. It caught on and has quickly expanded, with locations in Alliston, Innisfil, Bolton, Mississauga and Waterloo. Makadia is also planning to set up shop in Barrie, Wasaga Beach, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. She also hopes to eventually open in Bradford and Collingwood.

Her inspiration to start Guac Mexi Grill came while she was working for another restaurant.

“We were getting frozen stuff and already-made sauces. I didn’t feel good serving that to customers,” she said. “I wanted food that was flavourful and, at the same time, had clean ingredients.”

Guac Mexi Grill prides itself on its sauces and salsa, made in house, from scratch, and its fresh, preservative-free products like chicken and beef.

Makadia described her restaurant’s food as “a combination of typical Mexican and Tex-Mex.”

Guac Mexi Grill’s signature dish is barbacoa, a slow-cooked meat dish.

“It’s spicy and flavourful,” Makadia said, but noted the restaurant has products to cater to everyone’s spice tolerance.

She expects the Orillia location will employ 10 to 15 people.
