Oma's Ride raises $50K and counting for local Alzheimer Society

Inaugural event drew hundreds to Quayle's Brewery in Oro-Medonte on Sunday

Hundreds of people took part Sunday in the inaugural Oma’s Ride in support of the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County.

The fundraiser began at Quayle’s Brewery in Oro-Medonte.

“It’s a great day to come out and ride with friends and family and show our support for such a great cause,” said Jesse Brito, a participant.

The event started with opening ceremonies, followed by group cheers, and then it was off to the races.

Participants came from far and wide to take part in the ride, even as far away as Texas.

Those taking part in the 100-kilometre ride set off on their route, immediately followed by the 50-km group and the 20-km group.

“Today is a great day for a ride, and I thank you all who came out to support this cause,” said Ed Harper, who kicked off the ride.

The event was created after a family member of the organizer was diagnosed with dementia.

“My oma — hence the name Oma’s Ride — was diagnosed with dementia, and ever since she was, I always wanted to run something to help the stigma around the disease,” said event organizer Ann-Marie Kungl.

“Fundraisers like Oma’s Ride help to raise awareness about the society’s broad range of programs and services across Simcoe County while raising important funds to support programming we don’t get provincial funding for.”

By the time the event started, nearly $50,000 had been raised, with more donations still coming in.

Organizers say they are looking forward to where the fundraiser goes in the future.
