On a grim, grey day, Tudhope Park shone brightly with kids taking part in various OPP Kids Day activities on Saturday.
“This is an awesome day,” said Auxiliary Program Coordinator Glenn Relf. “I know the weather is not fantastic but the kids are smiling, so it's sun shining everywhere.”
The day has been a recurring feature of the Orillia Perch Festival for several years and features kids gathering at Tudhope Park to participate in various activities; there were 10 games and two learning stations.
“They get their passports signed off and they put their names in for a draw and pick prizes once their name is drawn,” said Relf. “Everyone gets a prize for just coming out.”
The day is a big hit for families, bringing out people who have come to fish as part of the festival or grandparents who are looking to spend time with their younger generation.
“I like spending time with grandpa,” said Isabelle Cooper, 8.
The Warminster resident was out at the park with her older brother and their grandfather. She participated in the activities and climbed into the police cruiser on display to play around with the panels.
“The message for the day is about community and being part of the community,” said Insp. Robyn MacEachern. “The focus is on families and bringing families together. It's about games with kids and just enjoying time together.”
The OPP also imbues elements of safety and conservation into the day’s activities, she said.
“Our marine unit is talking about marine safety,” said MacEachern, “and we also have conservation officers with their focus on conservation.”
