Orillia church group taking its quilt sale online

Westmount Church Women's in-person sale called off because of pandemic; online sale will run Sept. 2-16

A popular Westmount Church Women’s fundraiser won’t take place in person this year, but they’ve still got you covered.

The group holds a quilt sale once every year or two, but the COVID-19 pandemic has forced them to change plans.

This year’s sale will take place via Facebook, through an event called On Line WCW Quilt Sale, from Sept. 2 to 16. Those interested can look at the quilts online before the sale begins.

The group had planned to hold an in-person sale in June, but tentatively rescheduled it to September. The hope is the church will host a sale in April.

“We don’t know if that’s even going to work, so we decided to try an online sale,” said event organizer Linda Jordan, co-president of the Westmound Church Women.

More than 80 quilts will be available in the online sale, as well as many smaller items like table runners, wall hangings and quilted baskets. The quilts will range from baby to king size.

“There should be something for everyone’s price range,” Jordan said.

Money raised through the sale goes toward the Westmount Church Women’s efforts to support local, provincial and national charities. The group also supports a child in Africa.

The sales began a decade ago, after Jordan joined the church’s quilting group.

“I was finding that they needed a place to sell them. They were piling up,” she said. “I thought it would be a good way to raise money for the church.”

The late Jeanne Wallace always had her quilts in the sale, and “her dream was to see Westmount and Orillia become known for quilts,” Jordan said.

“I thought, after she passed away, I wouldn’t be able to do another sale,” she said. “She contributed a lot of quilts and she was also my person to go talk to about the sale.”

Wallace would have wanted this year’s sale to happen any way possible, Jordan added.

Six vendors will have items in the upcoming sale. Their bios can be viewed on the Facebook event page.
