Orillia fire crews snuff out basement fire on High Street

Fire was contained to basement and while cause is under investigation, Orillia fire official says the fire is not deemed suspicious

Orillia firefighters responded to the report of a basement fire at 499 High St. on Friday afternoon.

Orillia Fire Department deputy chief, Chris Ferry, says when crews arrived on the scene around 1:45 p.m. smoke was coming out the end unit of the townhouse complex located across the road from High Street Park. The fire was contained to the basement of one of the townhouses.

“Everybody is fine, there are no injuries,” Ferry said. “When the crew arrived, they stretched the line quick, got down, and got it out.”

Fire crews were still battling smoke on the first and second floors at around 2:30 p.m.

Ferry says 12 firefighters were on scene to battle the blaze.

The cause of the fire will be under investigation, says Ferry, who said the blaze is not deemed suspicious at this time.
