Orillia hair studio ready to celebrate grand opening tomorrow

'I realized my self-worth during the lockdown (and) that gave me the confidence to go out on my own,' says owner of new West Street North hair studio

Northern Roots Hair Studio is set to celebrate its grand opening tomorrow — more than a year after it officially began to welcome customers.

Because of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, the business, which opened in October of 2020, hasn’t been able to find its footing until now, explains owner Montana Hassard.

“We’ve only been operating for about six months” despite being open for over a year, Hassard chuckled.

Hassard decided to start the business after she became bored at home during the pandemic and found herself with lots of time to think about her career as a hairstylist. Previously, Hassard worked for Sharp Image Salon & Spa for 16 years.

“I realized my self-worth during the lockdown. I realized how many of my clients were supportive of me and not necessarily where I was working, so that gave me the confidence to go out on my own,” she said.

So far, Hassard says the early reviews on her new business at 249 West St. N., have all been positive.

“People love the atmosphere. It’s very warm, welcoming, and upbeat,” she said.

“I am a curly hair specialist, so people drive pretty far to see me. I’m also a perfectionist, which people like.”

Northern Roots has partnered with Uplifting Blessings, a charity that helps Orillia’s homeless and vulnerable population year-round.

“We are donating our entire basement space to give them a headquarters. They have a need for the space so they can create their Bags of Hope and Suitcases of Love, so we are allowing them to put everything under one area,” Hassard explained.

“Our customers really love that we are involved with the community.”

Hassard has also used her Indigenous background to create a strong relationship with many customers from the Rama community.

“I would say 50 percent to 70 percent of my customers are First Nations, so I’m lucky that they proudly support my business,” she said.

Hassard invites everyone from Rama and Orillia to attend tomorrow’s grand opening between noon and 7 p.m.

“This used to be the pool store, so I think there are a lot of people interested in seeing how much it’s changed in here,” she said of interest in the open house.

At the grand opening event, there will be complimentary services and a silent auction to help raise money to renovate the space downstairs for Uplifting Blessings.
