Every year on Labour Day, Canada’s unions celebrate workers and their contributions. In North Simcoe and Muskoka, workers, unions and community leaders will gather at Terry Fox Circle in Couchiching Beach Park on Sept. 5, starting at 11 a.m., to celebrate working people and to highlight the issues that matter most to them.

What: Labour Day Picnic

Where: Terry Fox Circle, Couchiching Beach Park, Orillia.

When: Sept. 5, 2022, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Who: North Simcoe Muskoka District Labour Council (NSMDLC)

“Canada is in the midst of an affordability crisis, and workers are the solution,” said North Simcoe Muskoka & District Labour Council (NSMDLC) president Mike DeRose. “It’s up to us to come together in solidarity and demand better from our decision-makers. Corporate greed has driven our economy for far too long. Worker power is the way forward, and it starts with strong organizing.”

The pandemic has renewed workers’ resolve, pushing them to demand better pay, improved working conditions and benefits. Canada’s unions are building on this momentum by encouraging workers to unionize and stand up to their employers with one strong, collective voice.

“Labour Day is an opportunity for us to be together in celebration, but also to discuss the things that matter most to workers,” said NSMDLC executive secretary Amylee Patterson. “Community and solidarity are important to union members, and we’re happy to be able to welcome everyone to this event once again. We encourage members to bring a friend, a family member, a neighbour or even an unengaged coworker to the event. Let them see the amazing support system of workers we have built and show them the strength of small community, pro-labour solidarity.”
