The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34 in Orillia is hosting a silent auction for a stunning handmade quilt, generously donated by an anonymous supporter.
According to the branch’s public relations officer, Rob McCron, the donor’s goal is to help raise funds for the Legion’s programs and initiatives.
“The fact that they wanted to do something nice for the Legion is pretty nice,” McCron said. “She didn’t want her name mentioned, but they wanted to help raise some money for the Legion.”
The seven-foot-by-six-foot quilt, which McCron estimates is worth $400, showcases an intricate design featuring hundreds of vibrant colours. He speculates that creating such a piece would have required countless hours of meticulous work.
“It’s a beautiful piece of work,” McCron said. “We are grateful that somebody made this, and we are hoping we can raise a good chunk of money for it.”
The quilt is currently on display in the Navy Room at the Legion, where members of the public are invited to view it and place their bids during business hours. The current highest bid is $200, but McCron hopes that figure will climb before the auction closes at noon on Friday, Dec. 20.
“By looking at it, I think you could use it as a quilt on your bed,” he said. “You don’t necessarily have to hang it up, but it comes with wooden pieces to hang it up if you want.”
McCron suggested the quilt could make a "great" Christmas gift.
“It’s a unique piece that anyone would be proud to own.”
Proceeds from the auction will likely go toward the Poppy Fund, which supports veterans in need, including those experiencing homelessness. Additional funds may also help the Legion upgrade its facilities and expand its community programs.
