Orillia man sent to hospital after cooking accident

Deputy fire chief reminds people to be 'fully aware' while cooking, adding there were no working smoke alarms in unit

An Orillia man was taken to Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital after a cooking accident Tuesday evening.

The Orillia Fire Department sent 13 firefighters to a smoke call at a unit inside a motel-style apartment building at 442 Laclie St. at about 6:15 p.m.

"When crews arrived, they could see smoke in the unit," said Chris Ferry, Orillia's deputy fire chief. "When they opened the door, there was light to moderate smoke in the unit."

He says firefighters found a pot on the stove that the tenant had been using to cook with. He says it was boiled dry.

"There was no real fire," he said. "The crew blew the smoke out of the unit and checked the other units to make sure everything was good."

Firefighters also found the tenant semi-conscious in the room.

"The tenant was checked by paramedics and was taken to hospital to be checked out," Ferry said. "That was only precautionary, and there were no serious injuries."

He says the Office of the Fire Marshal was notified of the incident, but there won't be any further investigation.

The Orillia Fire Department responds to several similar incidents each year.

"We always suggest that when people are cooking their meals to be fully aware of what is going on," Ferry said. "Don't leave the kitchen area while you're cooking because you could get distracted and forget about what you are cooking."

Ferry says there was no working smoke alarm in the unit at the time of the incident.

"It's important to have working smoke alarms because they will give you advanced notice if something happens," he said.
