Orillia Winter Carnival vows to bounce back after destructive fire

Contents of storage bin destroyed by blaze; Committee seeks community's help

NEWS RELEASE
DOWNTOWN ORILLIA

The Orillia Winter Carnival Committee is busy planning the 2019 Carnival despite losing the entire contents of its storage bin earlier this year.

Long-time Carnival Committee Volunteer and this year’s Carnival Co-Chair Mark Earl said he got the call from the OPP at 7:30 in morning on Apr. 24. “The OPP said the fire department had been on the scene at 5 a.m. They said it was likely kids goofing around. They were able to break into the container, start the fire and let it slow burn overnight.”

Over the years the carnival has purchased various items such as signage, components for games, and propane heaters – all of that has now been lost and will need to be replaced.

To address the loss as well as improve the carnival, the committee is reaching out to service clubs and the business community to sponsor and run a suggested winter carnival activity at this year’s event.

“We have a suggested list of activities along with the cost to run it (in most cases minimal) and the number of volunteers needed to run it” states Earl. “It’s in keeping with what the carnival is all about: a community event run by volunteers in your community for the community.”

We also have some great features planned for this year’s event that we’re very excited to share in the near future.

The 2019 Orillia Winter Carnival will be held at Couchiching Beach Park on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019.
