“If kids can see it, they can be it.” This quote, from author Lisa Bowes, embodies her work of inspiring children to be active through her best-selling book series, Lucy Tries.
Targeted to early readers aged 3-8, this diverse, inclusive series inspires children to read and be active so they can lead healthier and happier lives. The text and artwork also reinforce accepted principles of healthy child development. Bowes will elaborate on her philosophy and her series as guest speaker, via Zoom, at the CFUW Orillia monthly general meeting on Feb. 22.
A pioneer in Canadian broadcasting, Lisa Bowes is an award-winning journalist and media consultant based in Calgary, Alta. She began her career at TSN as a writer and then later became a reporter for the network’s bureaus in Winnipeg, Calgary and Toronto.
She moved on to become a commentator for TSN’s Sports Desk and then joined The Score as weekend anchor & host/producer of Sports Axxess. She has also worked for CBC during which she was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for best writing in an information program or series and has covered women’s hockey for CTV at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.
Bowes is a physical education graduate from Western University and is a passionate advocate for youth physical activity and reading literacy.
Following the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, she began work on the Lucy Tries Sports book series which encourages children to be active and persevere. In the recent past, she has given an in-person reading at the local bookstore, Manticore Books and has made several presentations to Orillia elementary school students.
A sought-after speaker, Bowes is currently presenting virtual school programs across North America while working on the next Lucy Tries book.
Lisa Bowes’ series, Lucy Tries, is available at Manticore Books or online here.
