Orillia's mayor, AKA Willy Wonka, offers Halloween tips

'Whether you're celebrating at home or trick or treating with your family ... please make sure to keep health and safety your No. 1 priority,' says mayor

Halloween is not cancelled in Orillia.

But Orillia Mayor Steve Clarke, who dressed up as Willy Wonka of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fame to mark the occasion, urged trick-or-treaters and those handing out candy to exercise caution.

He noted confirmed cases of COVID-19 are rising amid a surging second wave of the pandemic.

"It's extremely important that we continue to follow the public health protocols in place to keep our communities safe and healthy," said the mayor in a video address to the community.

He said there are still ways to have fun and celebrate responsibly. He suggested a virtual costume contest, scavenger hunt, pumpkin-carving contest or watching a scary movie.

If you are handing out candy this year, he suggested printing out posters that indicate that from the website of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.

"Whether you're celebrating at home or trick or treating with your family in your neighbourhood, please make sure to keep health and safety your No. 1 priority," he urged.
