The facility has reopened, according to the city.

Original story

Rotary Place, the twin-pad arena in west Orillia, is closed today due to a mechanical problem.

"Earlier this morning, gas was detected from a rooftop gas line unit at Rotary Place, prompting an evacuation of the facility as a precaution," said Melissa Gowanlock, the city's manager of communications.

"Emergency services responded, and gas to the building was shut off to ensure safety. The city has brought in a contractor who has identified a small break in an exterior gas line and is making the necessary repairs," Gowanlock said.

"There is no risk to the public," she added.

Impacted user groups have been contacted, and where possible, programs are being relocated to alternative locations, said Gowanlock. Program participants can visit orillia.ca/active for the latest schedule of programming or contact the Orillia Recreation Centre at 705-325-4386 for more information.

The city will provide an update to the public on its Facebook and Instagram channels and to user groups directly once the timing for the reopening is determined.

"We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work to resolve the issue," said Gowanlock.
