Oro African Church recognized with multicultural award

First annual Simcoe Excellence Multicultural Business Awards handed out recently

SIMCOE EXCELLENCE MULTICULTURAL BUSINESS AWARDS

The first annual SEMBA (Simcoe Excellence Multicultural Business Awards) gala took place on Saturday, April 29 at the Southshore Community Centre.

SEMBA, the newest Simcoe County awards, recognizes the many contributions made by Black and multicultural businesses and individuals to the success of Simcoe County.

The SEMBA Awards will continue to shine a light on these outstanding Black and multicultural businesses and individuals through a yearly awards ceremony aimed at showcasing their contributions.

“Business events like SEMBA are an essential part of strong communities,” noted Andrea Khanjin, MPP for Barrie-Innisfil.

There were eight award recipients in the following categories:

  • Arts and Literature — Michelle Guy
  • Community Service — Marsha Roett
  • Education — Roxann Whittingham
  • Fitness, Recreation and Sports — Reena Saint Louis
  • Humanitarian Activities — Henry Lukenge
  • Preservation of History — Oro African Church
  • Voluntarism — Ernestine Baldwin

They were chosen from nominations within the community. The winners were selected by an independent selection committee made up of community representatives in accordance with the eligibility criteria.
