A day after freezing rain and sleet transformed the city into a skating rink, snow is on the way today.
Long-time local amateur weather watcher David Brain said 12.2 millimetres of precipitation fell Sunday and Monday - including about three millimetres of ice accretion.
"If we would have been a degree or two colder, we would have had much more ice build up," said Brain, who noted the temperature hovered between -0.5 and -1 degree Celsius Monday.
Today, the mercury is dropping and that precipitation is expected to turn to snow this morning.
Brain said Orillians should expected two to four centimetres of the white stuff today and about the same amount overnight. But, he stressed, it's difficult to predict with any certainty.
He said the area is experiencing "a very unusual" storm. The system has "reversed and pinwheeled back, north-west, toward Michigan," Brain noted.
He said it is expected to "pinwheel back toward Central Georigan Bay and move east across Muskoka. We could get some brief snowsqualls (today) and Wednesday but it's too early to tell how much snow" might be on the way.
"Overall, expect a very active pattern with another storm system for Friday/Saturday and a return to colder weather and lake effect after next weekend," said Brain.
In light of the forecast, he advises people to be prepared when they travel, check the forecast and expect the unexpected.
