The year 2020 ended on a sad note for Paso Por Paso with the death, on Dec. 31, of Garry Fell, our friend and passionate supporter.
Following his retirement from Park Street Collegiate Institute, Garry joined Paso Por Paso and over the years has been involved with all aspects of the organization. As a committee member of the Scholarship Program, Garry threw his heart into providing financial assistance to promising Mayan men and women, to pursue a post-secondary education.
Garry also realized the importance of being connected with the people of the Panajachel region and until the last couple of years made the annual trip to Guatemala and on occasion brought his two adult children, Johanna and Craig.
Being an expert photographer, Garry took hundreds of pictures on his trips which he incorporated into our annual brochure and the many articles he provided to local media outlets. He also included many photos on our website, blog and Facebook page which he maintained.
Garry was always a willing participant of any Paso projects here at home, whether it was contributing hundreds of perennials and tomato seedlings to Paso’s annual sale, selling Guatemalan crafts at various markets; he was always one of the first to offer his time and energy.
When failing health prevented Garry from travel, and eventually from carrying out his responsibilities as a director, the board did not want to lose his valuable and thoughtful insight and he was appointed an honorary director. We will miss his expertise, guidance and friendship.
