Bent Law Legal Services is seeking the community's support in raising money for first responders who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The Plaid for Courage event takes place at the Moose Lodge on Kitchener Street on Nov. 23 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The night of dancing, raffle prizes, and food will raise funds for Boots on the Ground Peer Support for First Responders and Badge of Life Canada Strength in Numbers.
Law firm owner Stephanie Bent says she's learned through Virtual CBT Psychotherapy that 15 to 30 per cent of first responders develop PTSD during their career, which is why she decided it's an important cause to help.
"The number of suicides among first responders has continued to rise," she said. "We are hoping to raise money at this event to help make a difference so that those who struggle do not become a grim statistic."
Bent says Boots on the Ground and Badge of Life Canada are "priceless" resources that can save the lives of first responders.
"We want to hope that we can be a small difference in the journey towards healing and lowering the frightening stats," she said. "We want first responders to get the help they need while leaving the stigma behind. We want to see them continue that without hesitation."
Bent asks participants to wear their best plaid shirts to the event as a way to celebrate small-town Canadian culture.
"We want everyone to come have a night that is full of fun," she said. "We want people to feel good about making a difference for our first responders."
Tickets for the event cost $45 in advance or $50 if there are any remaining at the door. You can purchase tickets here.
The event will feature a cash bar with donations going to Moose Lodge charities.
