NEWS RELEASE
ORILLIA MARIPOSA GRANDMOTHERS TO GRANDMOTHERS
*************************
The Orillia Mariposa Grandmothers to Grandmothers group is hosting a Plant and Yard Sale on Saturday, June 4, from 8 a.m. until noon at 145 Cedar St., Orillia.
The members of this active group of Orillia grandmothers (and others) have been busy in their gardens splitting, digging, and re-potting some lovely, healthy plants. The extensive list of plants includes perennials, sedums, grasses, ground covers and many, many other types of plants.
Orillia residents will be familiar with the other sales hosted by Grandmothers to Grandmothers including the ever-popular Yards and Yarns and Jewelry Sales. With COVID restrictions these two sales were cancelled, but there will be a selection of yard sale items, fabric, wool, sewing notions, etc., as well as plenty of costume jewelry for sale on Saturday. All money raised from this sale goes to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
When the AIDS pandemic swept across the continent of Africa, it took the lives of nearly an entire generation — 35 million perished — which left their children alone and vulnerable. With little or no support, it was the grandmothers of Africa who stepped in to care for these children.
The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in Canada in response to the emerging crisis faced by grandmothers in Africa as they struggled to raise millions of children orphaned by AIDS.
Grandmothers and “grand-others” in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States have rallied in response, raising funds in their communities to support the life-enhancing programs run by grandmothers in Africa and the community-based organizations that support them.
