Plenty on tap during Scottish Festival this weekend

Events kick off Friday with Ceilidh at Royal Canadian Legion; there will also be parade Saturday to Couchiching Beach Park

A flag raising was held ahead of this weekend's Scottish Festival.

The annual Scottish Festival is set for another year this week.

The 46th annual event will recognize Clan Fleming this year in honour of Duncan Fleming, who started the festival in 1978.

Events taking place in the festival this year include:

  • July 19: Ceilidh at the Royal Canadian Legion. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the event kicking off at 7 p.m. with entertainment by Celtic Effect. Tickets are $30, include a light lunch, and are available here.
  • July 20: Parade at noon from Peter Street down Mississaga to Couchiching Beach Park for massed bands, festival pub, The event includes Scottish country and highland dancing, vendors, children’s village, and entertainment by Fliddlestix. A minimum $3 donation for a festival button is requested to help support the festival.
  • July 21: Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan (blessing of the Tartan) at St. Andrew’s Church. 10 a.m. service (all are welcome). There will also be an afternoon ceilidh at the legion 1 p.m. start) with entertainment by Pipes and Drums of Canada, Carl Stedmond will be singing the hits of Rod Stewart and more. The event is open to the public, but organizers ask that people donate for a festival button.
