Pop-up Christmas store returns ... possibly for last holiday season

'It's so good for the small crafters and business people. It's important that they have somewhere to share their work with people,' says retiring owner of Shenanigan’s

Judy Dewsbury has owned and operated Shenanigan’s Gifts and Crafts for the past six years.

A renowned pop-up Christmas store returned to the Orillia Square mall Friday morning.

For the sixth consecutive year, Shenanigan’s Gifts and Crafts will be selling handmade items from around 30 local artisans this holiday season.

"We have all kinds of Christmas decorations," said store owner Judy Dewsbury. "Almost everything is handmade by local crafters."

Sewing items, ornaments, woodworking, and unique gifts can be found at the shop located near No Frills.

"A lot of the crafters who make the products don't have enough to go to a show on their own," Dewsbury explained. "So, they bring it to me, and I sell it for them. They make their money without having to set up at craft shows which can be expensive."

Following the death of her husband last winter, Dewsbury has decided this will be her last year as the owner of the pop-up shop.

"It's getting to be a lot as I get older," she explained. "It's a lot to set up and to do on my own now."

Dewsbury, 65, is hoping that Shenanigan's will live on.

"I'm hoping that somebody will decide to continue it," she said. "I do have somebody who is interested, but she hasn't committed yet."

Dewsbury says the shop has built a legacy in Orillia she would love to see continue.

"I have some amazing customers who come in every year," she said. "It's so good for the small crafters and business people. It's important that they have somewhere to share their work with people."

Shenanigan’s is a "fun place" to shop, Dewsbury says. It's a shop that will help put customers into the holiday spirit, she added.

"I would say 60 per cent of our stock is Christmas decorations," she said. "The other 40 per cent is gift-type ideas."

To celebrate Dewsbury's last year, Shenanigan’s is having a raffle draw tomorrow for several shop items.

"My vendors are very generous," Dewsbury said. "They have all given me stuff to raffle off ... tomorrow."

Shenanigan’s is open on Wednesdays through Sundays until Dec. 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
