The Port of Orillia has slipped into a new season.
The annual opening of the downtown marina took place Thursday as members of the Orillia District Chamber of Commerce gathered at the Orillia Waterfront Centre.
“This is not only important for tourism. It’s important for all of our businesses,” said chamber president Dean Beers. “I really do believe this is the jewel of the Trent-Severn system.”
Allan Lafontaine agrees, and so do boaters.
Lafontaine, who is the port’s harbourmaster and the chamber’s managing director, has heard from boaters who appreciate the port’s proximity to a number of businesses.
“Even the Boating Ontario Association really thinks Orillia is doing a great job,” he said.
Last year, the number of visitors from the United States who docked at the port doubled.
“They love it here,” Lafontaine said.
The focus isn’t only on tourists, though, as there are plenty of events lined up for visitors as well as locals.
The Spring Boat, Cottage and Outdoor Show will return June 7 to 9. That will be followed by Christmas in June on the 22nd. Santa will be in town for that event, which will also feature a “Mrs. Claus baking fest.” Lafontaine is asking bakers with local businesses to contact the chamber to inquire about taking part.
Christmas lights will be up downtown, too, and Lafontaine encourages businesses to get into the early Christmas spirit with decorations and themed promotions.
A new summer concert series will be introduced. On Saturdays from 6 to 9 p.m., a band or DJ will play in the gazebo beside the Orillia Waterfront Centre. More details about that series will be released soon.
The Orillia Waterfront Festival will return Aug. 9 to 11. It will again feature the popular cardboard boat race.
After a successful first year, the port will host the second annual Pirate Party Aug. 31 to Sept. 1.
Sponsors are being sought for a variety of events. For more information about sponsorship, email [email protected] or call the chamber at 705-326-4424.
