Price tag for Orillia city council's remuneration hits $466K in 2023

Mayor Don McIsaac topped the list at $94,253, while city councillor's salary/expenses ranged from $42,500 to $51,000, according to report

City council cost taxpayers close to half a million dollars in 2023, between salary and expenses.

After accounting for salary and expenses, city council’s cost to taxpayers approached half a million dollars in 2023.

With salaries ranging from $88,767 for Mayor Don McIsaac, and $41,377 for each of the city’s eight councillors, the total cost of council’s remuneration came in at $419,786.

With an additional $46,641 in statutory deductions and expenses, the total bill for council’s services in 2023 rose to $466,427.

Below is a breakdown of each municipal politician's total remuneration and expenses, from most expensive to least.

Mayor Don McIsaac – $94,252.84

On top of his $88,767 salary, the mayor logged an additional 5,485.35 in statutory deductions, bringing his total remuneration north of $94,000.

However, the mayor logged no additional expenses through the year for conference registration and accommodations, travel and mileage, or telephone/communications.

Janet-Lynne Durnford – $51,076.75

Coming out on top of the eight city councillors, Durnford logged $3,060.64 in statutory deductions, as well as $6,638.69 in additional expenses.

Her bill for conference registration and accommodations totalled $5,680.03, with $764.22 billed for travel and mileage, and $194.44 for telephone/communications.

Luke Leatherdale – $50,787.80

Leatherdale logged $3,060.64 in statutory deductions, as well as council-leading $5,713.68 for conference registration and accommodations in 2023.

He also billed $351.28 for travel and mileage and $284.78 for telephone/communications, with all expenses totalling $6,349.74 for the year.

Jeff Czetwerzuk – $49,552.74

On top of his salary, the Ward 3 councillor logged $3,060.64 in statutory deductions, as well as $5114.68 in expenses in 2023.

Czetwerzuk billed $4,920.65 for conference registration and accommodations, as well as $194.03 for telephone/communications over the course of the year.

Jay Fallis – $46,038.25

Next up is fellow Ward 3 council member Jay Fallis, who logged $3,060.64 in statutory deductions in addition to $1,600.19 in total expenses for the year.

Fallis billed $200.99 for telephone/communications, and $1,399.20 for conference registration and accommodations.

Whitney Smith – $44,912.82

The Ward 1 council member logged $3,060.64 in statutory deductions, as well as $474.76 in additional expenses – between telephone/communications and conference registration and accommodations – as one half of the least costly Ward for remuneration in 2023.

David Campbell –  $44,607.56

As the other half of the city’s least costly ward, Ward 1 Coun. David Campbell logged $3,060.64 and just $169.50 in additional expenses, for conference registration and accommodations.

Tim Lauer – $42,690.60

Ward 4 Coun. Tim Lauer logged $806.88 in statutory deductions in 2023, with just one additional expense – $506.30 for telephone/communications – getting rung in for the year.

Ralph Cipolla – $42,508.10

At the bottom of the list is Ralph Cipolla – the city’s least costly council member for 2023.

The Ward 2 councillor logged $806.88 in statutory deductions, and only $323.80 in additional expenses for the year, for telephone/communications.
