Orillia’s Christina Hartwick is working on the art of remembrance.
Once again this year, the local artist is creating wire poppies and other poppy-themed works of art that will be unveiled at her Peter Street Arts District studio Saturday. The unique, custom art pieces will be available until Nov. 10.
Half of all proceeds from sales of the poppies will go to Orillia Branch 34 of the Royal Canadian Legion.
“I have always made wire flowers, large and small,” said Hartwick. “Every year around Remembrance Day I always felt the need to do more for our veterans and families.”
So, she put her talent to work and came up with this idea. And it’s caught on. She said she was overwhelmed at the support she received last year when she originated the concept.
Hartwick records the name of each person who purchases a poppy and includes those names on a letter of thanks that is displayed at the Legion.
“We want them to feel our love, (so) the veterans and their families know we will never forget,” said Hartwick.
After last year’s event, she made a $745 donation to the local Legion.
This year, she’s hoping to raise even more money.
In addition to the wire poppies, she has also created a sculptured poppy wall hanging and a beautiful memorial piece adorned with distinctive red poppies.
The sale begins Saturday at aRt & Home Studio, located at 17 Peter St. S. The opening day unveiling goes from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. People are encouraged to drop in, enjoy a sweet treat and cider and check out the unique artwork.
The sale continues until Remembrance Day.
