Province announces additional beds for Orillia long-term care home

Thirty-four new beds, 94 upgraded beds coming to Revera Oak Terrace, which is looking to build a modern, new facility in Orillia

A long-term care home in Orillia is getting new beds thanks to funding from the province.

Revera Oak Terrace will be adding 34 beds, while 94 existing ones will be upgraded.

“The beds in this announcement will not be added to the current location but will be moved to a new location in Orillia once Revera (has) confirmed the project’s new location for Oak Terrace in Orillia,” Wendy Gilmour, Revera’s senior vice-president of long-term care, said in a news release.

“At this time Revera (is) looking for a suitable property for a new build at which time the project will take approximately two years and, once built, the current location will then be closed to reopen in a new space.”

The project, she added, “demonstrates Revera’s commitment to renewing our long-term care infrastructure.

“The new, larger, 128-bed home will incorporate the latest design standards to create a safe, home-like environment for residents, better working conditions for staff, and greater access to care in Orillia. Revera looks forward to working with the Ministry of Long-Term Care and the City of Orillia in getting this project underway.”

Simcoe North MPP Jill Dunlop said the addition of new and upgraded beds “is positive news for Orillia and their families as we work to ensure that seniors across Simcoe County have access to the quality care that they deserve.”

Mayor Steve Clarke welcomed the news.

“We have had a lack of quality care beds for seniors for many years. The pandemic has both highlighted and exacerbated this shortage,” he said. “The new and upgraded beds ‘in the pipeline’ announced yesterday, along with the commitment to four hours of care per patient per day and greater oversight, is great news, and will go a long way in addressing this critical need.”

The funding is part of the province’s $6.4-billion commitment to build more than 30,000 new beds by 2028 and 28,000 upgraded beds in Ontario.

There are 859 new and 764 upgraded beds in development, under construction or finished in the Simcoe County, including the following:
