The provincial government made a $10.5-million splash in Orillia aimed at upgrading the city's water supply and paving the way for more housing Friday afternoon.
During an announcement event at the Harvey Hill Reservoir on a sunny Friday afternoon, Simcoe North MPP Jill Dunlop announced the City of Orillia will be receiving $10,599,580 for the construction and replacement water standpipe in West Orillia.
"This significant investment will be instrumental in enabling the construction of 3,554 new homes right here in the community," Dunlop said.
"Housing is a fundamental need, and today's announcement is a huge step forward in addressing the growing demand for affordable and quality homes in Orillia."
Dunlop says the funds won't only increase the housing supply but will also ensure the city's water systems can support growth.
"We are laying the groundwork for a sustainable and vibrant future," she said. "This $10 million investment means more than just bricks and mortar. It's about building a stronger, more resilient community."
Dunlop says the new homes will provide opportunities for families, young professionals and seniors to live and thrive in Orillia.
"It will help attract new businesses, create jobs and stimulate our local economy," she said. "Moreover, this project reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship."
By modernizing and expanding water infrastructure, Dunlop says the provincial and municipal government will be safeguarding natural resources and ensuring the community continues to be a place where people want to live, work, and raise their families.
"Together, we are shaping the future of the City of Orillia, making it a place where everyone can find a home and be part of a community that cares," she said.
Orillia Mayor Don McIsaac thanked Dunlop and the province for the substantial investment.
"As Orillia continues to grow, it's essential that our infrastructure evolves to meet our expanding housing demand," he said. "This provincial government has continued to invest in this province, and particularly in Orillia, and this is an investment that will live on for generations."
McIsaac says the funding will assist with the construction of the replacement water standpipe, providing additional capacity needed to ensure the community's water system remains "robust and reliable," both now and in the future.
"The original Harvey Hill Reservoir was constructed in 1968 and it's reaching the condition that needs to be replaced," he explained. "The reservoir provides water storage for day-to-day use, water main breaks, and emergencies that require firefighting."
McIsaac says the new reservoir will continue to provide drinking water for the residents and will allow for new homes to be built in west Orillia.
