Elder Mark Douglas of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation will speak about Truth and Reconciliation at Storytelling Orillia’s September circle on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Creative Nomad Studios, 23 Mississaga St. W., Orillia.

Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30 is a time to pause and think about the tragic legacy of residential schools, the missing children who died, their families, and today’s survivors.

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, based at the University of Manitoba, says, “Education opens the door to understanding. Together we can create a more informed and compassionate society.”

Douglas generously shares traditional wisdom and teachings, and has been a key organizer of Storytelling Orillia since it began in 2011. He has worked in a true spirit of reconciliation for decades in Orillia and area, speaking to council, schools, Lakehead University and community groups. Storytelling Orillia is grateful that he has agreed to lead this circle.

As is usual with Storytelling Orillia at its gatherings on the last Sunday of each month, everyone is welcome, either to listen or share a short story. This month, all are invited to share stories that further our journey of understanding, healing, and ongoing reconciliation.

There is no charge, but small donations are accepted to help with costs.
