Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has launched the development of a competitive process to procure long-term energy supply projects. The Long-Term 2 Energy Supply Request for Proposals (the “LT2(e) RFP”), is intended to acquire approximately 14,000 GWh of annual energy supply to meet system energy needs from new-build electricity generating facilities.
In response to this opportunity, Orillia Power Generation Corporation and the Chippewas of Rama First Nation have entered into an equity partnership agreement to develop and submit a proposal to build and operate a 25Mw Solar Energy Facility within Ramara Township, located within the Chippewas of Rama First Nation traditional territory.
This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing clean energy solutions while fostering economic and environmental benefits for both partners and the broader community.
This agreement marks a significant milestone in moving the project forward. Key next steps include consultation, community engagement, municipal support resolutions and environmental assessments. Together, Rama First Nation and Orillia Power Generation are working diligently to complete these requirements in preparation for the proposal submission, scheduled for Fall, 2025.
If awarded a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) by the IESO, the sustainable energy partnership will oversee the construction and operation of the solar facility, with a targeted commercial operation date in early 2029. This initiative underscores the importance of sustainable energy development in alignment with both Rama First Nation’s values and modern clean energy goals.
"This partnership is an important step in ensuring that our community plays a key role in the development of sustainable energy in our traditional territory," said Chief Ted Williams on behalf of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation Council.
"We are committed to working together with our neighbours, the City of Orillia and Orillia Power, to create economic opportunities while protecting our land and the environment for future generations," said Williams.
“This partnership between Orillia Power Generation Corporation and the Chippewas of Rama First Nation represents a meaningful step toward a sustainable energy future for our region,” said City of Orillia Mayor, Don McIsaac.
“Investing in renewable energy not only strengthens our local economy, but also aligns with Orillia Council’s priorities, including our shared commitment to climate action and environmental stewardship. We are proud to support this collaboration and look forward to the positive impact this project will have on our communities," said McIsaac.
“We are very pleased to have the Chippewas of Rama First Nation as a partner in this sustainable energy project,” said Shaun Hinds, president and CEO of Orillia Power Generation. “We feel our values, as a community-focused and environmentally responsible operator, are very much aligned with those of Rama First Nation. As a purpose-driven company, with all revenues staying in and supporting our communities, partnering with the Chippewas of Rama First Nation further builds upon this admirable quality.”
The Chippewas of Rama First Nation is a proud and progressive Anishinaabe community located in Central Ontario. With a rich history and deep connection to the land, Rama First Nation is committed to good treaty relations, cultural preservation, economic development, and environmental stewardship
Orillia Power Generation Corporation is wholly owned by the City of Orillia and takes great pride in operating its fleet of renewable generation assets with a commitment to employee, public safety and environmental stewardship.
