Janet Banfield recently announced her retirement as the CEO and chief librarian of Ramara’s public library system, effective Jan. 3, 2025.

Banfield began her career championing the creation of the Ramara Centre which came to fruition in February of 2001. Since then she has led the library system to become the hub of the Ramara community, offering programs and opportunities for patrons that are the envy of many larger communities.

Jane Ste. Marie, chairperson, speaking on behalf of the Ramara Public Library Board, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Janet for her dedicated service and visionary leadership.

“Janet leaves me in awe. Not only does she appear to know everyone in the community but she has fostered relationships with other like-minded organizations that have enabled the library to secure opportunities for patrons that go way beyond the lending of books," said Ste. Marie.

"In her 25-year career she has demonstrated innovation, flexibility and a true understanding of the needs of the clientele in this small rural community. She will be sorely missed, but we know her retirement will be yet another exciting chapter in her biography.”

“Above all, what has made my time at Ramara Public Library truly amazing is the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our patrons and the broader community," she said.

"Whether it was through providing access to educational resources, fostering a love for reading, providing leading-edge technology and support or offering a welcoming space for all, I have cherished every moment of serving our community. It has been an honour and a privilege. I will carry the memories of my time here with me always.”

Those wishing to celebrate Janet Banfield’s exemplary career and upcoming retirement may do so by attending an open house at the Ramara Centre from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 27 2024.
