Update
The City of Orillia isn’t calling off its declaration of a significant weather event yet after about 50 centimetres of snow fell here Friday.
All roads have been plowed, but because of the amount of snow, numerous passes have to be made, the city said on social media.
“Crews remain fully deployed and continue working to clear roads and sidewalks as efficiently as possible, but this will take time.
“Due to the volume of snow, once cleanup is complete, the next steps will include cutting back snowbanks and hauling snow away (weather and resource permitting).”
The city asks residents to avoid parking on streets Saturday to make snow-clearing efforts easier for crews. Also, overnight parking restrictions are in effect from midnight to 7 a.m.
Residents are also asked not to shovel snow onto roads as it can hamper snow-removal efforts and create hazards for vehicles and pedestrians.
Original story
The declaration of a significant weather event has been lifted in Ramara and Severn townships, while it appears to remain in place for the City of Orillia and Oro-Medonte Township.
The municipalities made the declaration Friday as the region was walloped with snow. Now that it has been lifted, standard winter maintenance will resume.
The Township of Ramara is asking residents to follow these guidelines as it cleans up:
- Do not park on the road.
- Do not deposit snow onto the road, as it violates the Highway Traffic Act and creates unsafe conditions.
- Keep mailboxes and green civic address signs visible and clear of snow.
- Keep children away from snowbanks. Do not allow them to tunnel into snowbanks, as they can collapse or may be pushed back by snow plows.
- Ensure snow piles do not block access to fire hydrants, catch basins, drains, or culverts.
- Overnight parking (from midnight to 7 a.m.) is prohibited on any municipal roadway. Vehicles will be ticketed regardless of snow-clearing operations and weather conditions.
