Residents homeless after Halloween night blaze in Orillia apartment building

Fire in King Street apartment building unit sends one to hospital, with residents unable to stay in the building tonight due to smoke damage

Residents at a King Street apartment building were evacuated Thursday night, with one transported to hospital, following a fire in one of the building’s dozen units.

The Orillia Fire Department received a call about a fire at 80 King St. at around 5:30 p.m., with one unit sustaining significant smoke and fire damage, said deputy fire chief Chris Ferry.

“One unit has a lot of fire and smoke damage,” Ferry told OrilliaMatters. “The fire was contained to one unit, but there is smoke damage throughout.”

Firefighters and Simcoe County paramedics assisted six people from the building while others evacuated, with just one resident, who was “conscious and alert,” sent to hospital on a precautionary basis, Ferry said.

Due to the smoke damage, Ferry said residents will not be able to stay in the building tonight, but said volunteers from North Simcoe Victim Services will be attending the scene to help residents find places to stay for the evening.
