'So much fun': Pumpkin patch proves popular as Halloween nears

'We picked our pumpkins and did the corn maze. We really enjoyed doing the mini putt, too,' says teen of Hewitts Fun Farm's Halloween-themed events

With only two weekends left to pick pumpkins, hundreds of families are flocking to Hewitts Fun Farm this weekend.

During the Halloween season, thousands of people will visit the farm on Town Line near Warminster. Owner Trevor Hewitt says the main attraction is the pumpkin patch.

"Every paid admission gets a pumpkin," he explained. "You take a wagon ride out to the patch and get to pick one."

The number of pumpkins left in the patch is starting to dwindle.

"It's been a really good year for pumpkins," Hewitt said. "They are massive, but sometimes when they are really big, there aren't quite as many."

The corn maze, which covers nearly 10 acres, is another attraction that draws people to Hewitts. During the Halloween season, Hewitts hosts a flashlight maze every Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.

"It's definitely a hit with some of the older kids," Hewitt said. "It can be challenging; some people finish it in 20 minutes and others finish it in an hour and 20 minutes."

He hopes local youth have an educational experience when they visit the farm.

"We put out different facts about the animals so the kids can learn a little more about them," he said. "We educate about how pumpkins grow, life cycles, and those sorts of things."

Abbey Woods, an early childhood educator at West Ridge Early Education Centre, brought 32 kids from the daycare ages five to nine to Hewitts on Friday.

"It's so much fun. There are so many things for the kids to do," she said.

Hewitts Fun Farm challenges children to find different ways to use their imagination.

"They learn about culture here," she said. "There are so many activities and great things for the kids to learn."

Five-year-old Claire Ford picked a pumpkin Friday with her brother, Liam, sister, Norah, and mother, Allison.

"When I get home, I'm going to carve my pumpkin," she said. "Maybe I'll carve a unicorn."

Other than the pumpkin patch, Ford says the highlight of her day was seeing the animals.

"A goat nibbled on my hand," she said. "I also got to see no-drama llamas for the first time."

Charlie Taylor, 14, spent the day at Hewitts on Friday with his brother, Zeke, mother, Carolyn, and father, Grant.

"We picked our pumpkins and did the corn maze," he said. "We really enjoyed doing the mini putt, too."

Taylor says visiting the pumpkin patch is a tradition he looks forward to each year.

"You only get to do it once a year," he said. "It's always a good time and the corn maze is pretty good compared to the other local ones."

Hewitts Fun Farm is open for two more weekends during the Halloween season. It is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets cost $12.85 and can be purchased at the farm at 3331 Town Line.

For those who want to brave the corn maze on a Saturday night, tickets cost $10.
