Urban planning affects every aspect of our daily lives: where we live, where we shop, where we play, how we navigate our neighbourhood, how we access our community’s services.

For better or for worse, urban planning has a direct bearing on our quality of life. All cities, including Orillia, are a collection of neighbourhoods which work to make a city more functional — when they are designed to do so.

Sustainable Orillia is pleased to announce that David Stinson, a professional urban planner from Orillia, will lead a series of urban walks, launching later this month on Saturday, Sept. 24. David has walked the length and breadth of Orillia many times and has a keen and trained eye for identifying examples of good — and mediocre — planning decisions from past and present developments in the Sunshine City.

In the course of these walks, David will examine examples of both types of planning, while providing an overview of sustainable urban planning principles. A timely topic for our community. The Sept. 24 walk will cover the downtown area, with particular emphasis on the new waterfront project.

As the number of participants for each walk is limited, it is strongly suggested that you pre-register for this free event. This can be done at www.eventbrite.ca/e/415675876737.

As the city undertakes a review of the city Official Plan, all Orillians who are interested in the changes needed to improve the sustainability and quality of life in our city will find much to think about in this series. Register today and watch for more information on the Sustainable Orillia Urban Walk Series over the weeks ahead.
