Sweet Spring Fling on tap at Orillia Secondary School

Students tuning up for 11th annual fund-raising event on April 26

Spring is in the air and in Orillia, that means the sap is flowing, the snow is melting and it’s time for the Sweet Spring Fling.

The popular 11th annual event, organized by the school's Parents Music Association from Orillia Secondary School, is a fundraiser for the music program.

But it’s also an evening that is enjoyable and hits all the right notes, says the group’s president, Michelle Madden.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Madden said of the annual Sweet Spring Fling, which will be held April 26 at OSS. “The students work so hard and they really enjoy playing for the community.”

Music is the focus of the event. The stage bands from OSS will be performing, while Brassworks, a local group, will also regale the audience.

In addition, former students and teachers from ODCVI, Park Street and OSS have created an alumni band that will also perform.

New this year, at the end of the night, there will be a grand finale where all the musicians will play together.

“We’re really looking forward to that,” said Madden.

And while there will be music of all types and genres, there will also be dancing in the aisles. Madden said local dance groups have been invited and will be doing more than just tapping their toes.

Sweet treats are also provided. There will be a range of tasty offerings and, once again, Mariposa Market is providing strawberries dipped in chocolate.

And Madden urges you to bring your wallet and support the music program by participating in the silent auction.

“The auction is the bit fundraising part of the evening,” she said, noting the business community has been “very generous” in donating to the cause.

Madden said offerings range from overnight stays at Deerhurst and Stonegate Inn to art work, jewellery, tickets to the Mariposa Folk Festival, gift cards for local businesses and much more.

“There really is something of interest for everyone from kids to grandparents,” said Madden.

Money raised at the event is used to support the music program

“The Parents Council covers the cost of educational trips and learning opportunities outside the school,” said Madden.

In addition, money from this event helps fund scholarships for departing Grade 12 students.

“It’s amazing to see a kid who perhaps started shy in Grade 9, had never played an instrument by Grade 12, they’ve become a leader that showed a lot of development and will carry that love of music with them throughout their life.”

TIckets for the April 26 event are $20. You can pick up tickets at OSS or call the office, 705-329-4537 to reserve tickets

Doors open at 6:30 and music will begin at 7 p.m.
