NEWS RELEASE
COUNTY OF SIMCOE

Warden George Cornell has proclaimed September 30th as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Simcoe County.

In recognition and commemoration of those affected by the residential school system across Canada, the County of Simcoe has raised the Every Child Matters flag at the County Administration Office, where it will remain raised until the Day of Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30, 2021.

“Raising this flag, supporting Orange Shirt Day and proclaiming the Day of Truth and Reconciliation is extremely important as we look to educate ourselves, raise awareness, recognize our past and find solutions for the future,” said Warden George Cornell.

“The tragic history and ongoing legacy of Residential Schools should never be forgotten in this country. It is collectively up to us to begin the process of reconciliation and this day of reflection gives us a place to start in the important process of learning and growing as a nation.”

As Sept. 30 approaches, the County is also providing employees with education and awareness resources and encouraging staff to wear the colour orange on Sept. 30 to show their support for Orange Shirt Day.
