Tree identifier plaque may be planted at Couchiching Beach Park

'It's one thing to have an app. It's another thing to have a plaque in place where that information is readily available,' said Coun. Jay Fallis of idea

Two city councillors won their colleagues' support to have city staff explore the idea of creating a large plaque at Couchiching Beach Park outlining the tree and plant species found within the park.

A plaque about the trees and plant species within Couchiching Beach Park could be erected at the popular waterfront park.

Councillors Tim Lauer and Jay Fallis obtained their colleagues' approval to have staff prepare a report about the costs and feasibility of creating one large plaque.

"This came out of a response from a constituent as an opportunity for further education about what type of trees are in Couchiching Park," said Fallis.

The report would be written by staff in consultation with the Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Working Group.

Coun. Luke Leatherdale expressed concerns about the idea.

"I'm very concerned about the costs of this. There is also apps on your phone that will identify trees," he said.

Fallis responded saying, "It's one thing to have an app. It's another thing to have a plaque in place where that information is readily available. The cost will come at a later date and it would go to budget."
