A moose goes for a stroll on Georgian Bay near Victoria Harbour.

Jon Funston is kind of surprised a video he took on his way to work Friday morning has gone viral, well at least North Simcoe viral.

Funston was driving his snowmobile from Sturgeon Bay to Honey Harbour when he came across something he doesn't see everyday: A moose casually walking by and heading out onto Georgian Bay near Robin's Point.

"It was a pretty interesting experience," says Funston, who patrols winter cottages to ensure nothing is amiss and, therefore, drives a snowmobile to work. "It looked to me like it was heading to an island."

Funston says that while he regularly comes across deer making their way along Georgian Bay, viewing a moose heading out onto Georgian Bay just isn't as common.

"I've seen them a few times (in the area), but never come across one (on the bay)," Funston says of the video that's elicited more than 100 comments on social media about what an unusual sight it is.

"You don't see them too often."

Taylor Kendall wrote on Facebook: "This is the most Canadian thing I’ve ever seen."

Funston says he waited until the following day to post the video to ensure the moose's safety.

"I didn't want a bunch of people to go out and chase it," he says, noting both moose and deer have a pretty good sense of when ice on the bay is thick enough for them to walk on.
