After two years, the popular Orillia Waterfront Festival is returning to Centennial and Couchiching Beach parks.
The event, hosted by the Orillia District Chamber of Commerce, will take place Aug. 5 to 7. It will include a cardboard boat race Aug. 7 at 12 p.m. in the area east of Terry Fox Circle, near the federal dock.
The race has always been a crowd pleaser in previous years as spectators gather to watch people paddle their homemade creations and earn honours including the best-dressed crew and the Titanic award — given for the “most spectacular sinking,” the chamber noted in a news release.
Registration for the race is open to the public. Single and team entries are welcomed.
The boats can be any shape and size, but must be made of cardboard. Organizers do not allow Styrofoam because it can break into small pieces and can be difficult to remove from the water, but other items can be used for buoyancy.
More information about the race can be found on the chamber’s website. Online registration will be open until Aug. 3.
The Orillia Waterfront Festival will feature plenty of other entertainment options, including live music and “Dock Diving Dogs.” Food and other vendors will also be on hand.
