The Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club recently competed at Union Cup hosted by The Whitby Dolphins Swim Club held at the Markham Pan Am Centre.

Thirty-two swimmers were in attendance and raced very well. Two more club records were broken: Blythe Wiecalwek: 13/14 200 backstroke (2:27.60) and Indiana Abram 11/12 boys 200 butterfly (2:53.17).

“Our club has been without our home pool since Nov. 17. We have had to train at alternate YMCAs out of town with limited pool time and space. Considering all of that we did quite well,” says head coach Meredith Thompson-Edwards.

Most of the Channel Cats in attendance raced some personal best times and definitely followed their race plans.

“Our swimmers are experiencing a big lesson in adversity, which will only help them in the future,” adds Thompson-Edwards.

Swimmers in attendance include: Peyton Nie, Hayden Nie, Esmee Rosati, Ryan Pederson, Meghan Rogers, Ben Thomson, Charlee Tillmanns, Cameron Tillmanns, Jackson Denne, Alexander Baillie, Maelle Bouchard, Rachel Carr, Zachary Sternberg, Anna Holton, Olivia Lepage, Tristan Sekleski, Owen Wagner, Hannah Kennedy, Flora Haslem, Meagan Mackenzie, Georgia Hart, Sayre Hart, Blythe Wiecalwek, Adair Wieclawek, Genevieve Loewen, Nathan McClinchey, Katie Heckendorn, Emily Gordon, Chilyn Fenton, Indiana Abram, Evangeline Cooke and Rebecca Mascioli.

The local club will be heading to the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre for Ontario Junior Internationals.

Blythe Wieclawek is competing at the International meet, and there are four swimmers who qualified for the 13 and under Fundamentals Clinic hosted by Swim Ontario during the weekend: Anna Holton, Indiana Abram, Adair Wieclawek and Hayden Nie.
