The Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club recently hosted the second annual Elaine Thompson Memorial Meet at the Orillia Recreation Centre.
Clubs from Muskoka, Barrie, Peterborough, Lindsay, Owen Sound, Collingwood and Brampton participated in the meet.
The local club hosts this meet in honour of longtime coach Elaine Thompson, who passed away from cancer in February of 2020.
“My mom would be so honoured to know that the club named a meet after her and that her memory lives on in the swimming world,” said daughter and head coach Meredith Thompson-Edwards. “It is important to our family that she continues to be remembered for her contribution to the sport.”
Orillia Channel Cats swimmers from senior novice, bronze, silver and gold competed in the meet. There were a few swimmers who qualified for Huronia Short Course Regionals in a few more events, including Christopher Dorevich (100-metre breaststroke), Harrison Dorevich (200-metre freestyle), Peyton Pendlebury (100-metre freestyle), Ralph Woergerer (100-metre breaststroke and 100-metre butterfly), Kajun Bonnekamp (200-metre freestyle) and Dario Rotar (50-metre backstroke).
