Starting July 2, Hockey Moves Summer Camps kick off in Simcoe County and Muskoka — their second summer since launching.

“We’re extremely excited to be in some new towns this summer,” said Jake Mortley, co-owner and head instructor for Hockey Moves. “I’m personally excited to go back to some places where I grew up playing hockey. Playing tournaments in Collingwood; I played in Huntsville when I was a kid — so going back to run a program this summer is exciting.”

In addition to running camps for the first time in Huntsville and Collingwood, Hockey Moves is coming back to Gravenhurst, Orillia, Alliston and Midland.

The camps will be split into two age groups, with a morning program for ages five to nine and an afternoon program for ages 10 to 14. The instructors will group kids according to skill level, allowing the campers to improve at an appropriate competitive level for their ability.

“At Hockey Moves here in the summer we try to bring as much fun as we can, but also take the time to learn as everyone’s hockey seasons are approaching fast,” said Mortley.

The program includes two hours of ice time each day, and dryland training and games.

Mortley will be supported by a mix of return instructors from last summer as well as some new talent.

Hunter Godmere brought exciting energy to Hockey Moves last summer, and will be instructing again.

“I feel like Hunter is the right-hand man to me when I’m there,” said Mortley. “Enthusiastic. Good with the kids. Hunter’s happy … continuing to chase his dreams of the highest level of professional he can.”

Sean Ross is a new Muskoka Hockey Moves instructor with an impressive hockey career.

“Sean Ross caught my eye because he was a captain,” said Mortley. “He’s always had a letter on his jersey and continued to be a leader wearing the C and the A through his career. Sean’s a true example of what it takes to make it to the next level. Super excited to have him out this summer.”

Mortley also understands the importance of making Hockey Moves camps fun — especially for many of the younger players who are just getting started. Although his hockey resumé isn’t as long, Nic McFadden brings high energy and optimism along with experience as assistant coach for the U11 Orillia Terriers.

“He’s a community guy. Sports guy. Loves hockey,” said Mortley.

Hockey Moves summer camps are for both boys and girls

“It’s going to be great to have two girls in the mix this summer,” said Mortley — referring to two Hockey Moves instructors — “with us being a co-ed hockey program. Paige and Emily are both striving to play at the highest level of hockey they can play, with both of them achieving semi and professional status. Bringing them on this summer and having them take part is going to be helpful with all of the girls that are joining the summer programs.”

Paige McGuire, an experienced hockey player with time spent playing in Sweden, joined Hockey Moves last summer, helping create a fun environment with her warm and friendly attitude.

Emily Pinto is new to Hockey Moves this summer

“I want to do something that I love,” said Pinto, “and basically my whole life has been hockey, so I kind of want to stay close to it because it’s what I’ve always known and it’s what I love to do — and I obviously want to do something that I enjoy.”

“With nearly all of our coaches striving to take their game to the next level,” said Mortley, “you expect a serious amount of skill and knowledge.”
