Lakers juvenile boys take bronze

The boys U17 Juvenile Boys Orillia Lakers concluded a successful season by finishing third in Division 1 at the Ontario Basketball Association championships in Sault Ste. Marie this weekend. The boys had a great season, moving up several divisions over the last year and ending with a record of 20 wins against 7 losses.

The championship weekend started out tough with a well-played loss to the second-ranked Peterborough Power. Saturday saw wins over Cooksville and the tournament hosts, “Steel City”.

On Sunday, the sixth-ranked Lakers faced off against the fourth-ranked Whitby Saints. The Lakers dug themselves a deep hole in the first half, with the early deficit reaching 17 points. The boys kept their focus and chipped away before regaining the lead with three minutes left. A huge turning point in the comeback was a 30-foot buzzer-beater by Joan Colominas at the end of the third quarter.

In the end, the Lakers prevailed 91-87. Luke Sallows led all scorers with 28 points, followed by Colominas (20), Ben Long (18), Ben Marzano (7), Will Quigley (7), Aiden Hoffman (6), Jonathon James (3), Logan Monaghan (1), and Brandon Papist (1).
