The Boots and Hearts Barn Burner charity hockey game is getting a big-name boost for this summer's event.
It was announced Monday that Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares will be in Barrie on Aug. 3 for the game, which raises money for local charities and is returning after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
Tavares joined the Leafs on July 1, 2018 and became the 25th captain in team history in October 2019.
Also announced for the charity event, which will be played at the Sadlon Arena, are the game’s captains Mike Gartner and Gary Roberts.
Organizers also announced on Monday that Devin Shore and Chris Tierney will also play, with more talent to be named over the coming weeks.
Alex Nuttall is hosting the event and has been a part of it for the 15 years it has been happening.
With the two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, Nuttall told BarrieToday that everyone is looking forward to getting back to it.
“It’s really exciting to be able to get back in," he said. "The players are excited to come back. That will be evident by the incredible rosters we’ll put out this year.
“Everyone in the community is excited and I hear it often. It's just a really loved event mixing hockey and raising money for great causes," Nuttall added.
The Boots and Hearts Barn Burner is a charity hockey game that raises money for Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), the Rotary Club, PIE Education, Easter Seals, and the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).
The event takes place Wednesday, Aug. 3 beginning at 6:30 p.m. with tickets available by clicking here.
