The Legion Br. 34 U16 Orillia Lakers girls are still undefeated in Ontario Basketball ‘B” League action.
In a recent game against the undefeated Mississauga Jayhawks, the Lakers trailed throughout the game.
With just over three minutes left and down by 11 points, the resilient Lakers took their full-court pressure to another level. With Ashley Schryer and Lauryn Buchan leading the way on defence, the girls fought back to within two points, and with one last steal, the ball came out to Lilja Toland with just seconds remaining for a last shot attempt.
Toland calmly hit the three-point shot for the 19th point of the quarter and the upset victory, 32-31! Hennessy Langner led the way, scoring 13 points, with nine of those in the last quarter, leading the comeback victory.
In the second game of the day against their foes from Barrie, the girls came out strong and built a 12-3 lead after the first quarter.
The second quarter was led by Zoe Peeters and Ashley Schryer with strong defensive play; Orillia has a 12-point lead at the half.
With Barrie closing the gap in the third quarter to six points, Isabella Fluguel made a late end-to-end drive and layup which seemed to take the steam out of Barrie's comeback attempt. Orillia then pulled away in the fourth quarter and on to a 41-25 victory.
Having a day, Hennessy Langner led the scoring with 10 points, with Lauryn Buchan chipping in nine for the victors.
The teamwork from the Lakers has been exceptional this season as they continue to out-work and out-hustle every team they have met.
The girls are competing at a tournament in Niagara Falls this weekend.
