In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the community and his achievements in Special Olympics, Orillia speed skater Stephen Graham was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal by the Government of Canada last month.

The award, given to individuals who have made a significant impact in Canada, celebrates Graham’s dedication, athletic success, and unwavering commitment to inspiring others.

Graham’s journey as a Special Olympian began after he moved to Orillia from Lindsay 27 years ago and found purpose and connection through sports.

“Since I moved here, Special Olympics has been my life,” he shared. “It’s given me confidence, respect, friendship, and a more outgoing perspective on life.”

Without the Special Olympics, Graham believes his life would have been markedly different.

“I’d be working, going home, and doing nothing,” he said. “It keeps me active, engaged in the community, and it gives me purpose.”

A highly decorated speed skater, Graham has represented Canada at three Special Olympics World Games — in 2009, 2013 and 2017 — securing an impressive five gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

“Going to three world championships was an amazing experience,” he said. “Speed skating is my passion, and that’s the biggest stage for me to compete on.”

His achievements on the international stage have made him a role model, not only for athletes in his community but for Special Olympians across the globe.

Graham’s impact extends beyond the rink. He supports and volunteers with law enforcement fundraising initiatives, and he has been a dedicated advocate and ambassador for helping to raise funds for Special Olympics programs.

“Law enforcement is our No. 1 fundraiser. Without them, Special Olympics wouldn’t exist,” Graham explained. “I want to give back because they’ve given me everything — the opportunities, the friendships, and the competitions.”

Receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal was an emotional moment for Graham.

“I was speechless. I didn’t even know what the award was about at first,” he said. “When I realized how big of a deal it was, it was such an amazing honour.”

For Graham, the medal symbolizes not only his athletic success but also his role as a community leader and mentor.

“I just like telling my stories, why I do it — because it makes me enjoy life better,” he said. “My goal is to encourage others to take advantage of opportunities in sports, just as I have.”

As he continues to inspire future generations of athletes, his message remains simple yet powerful. “Anything’s possible. Anyone can achieve their goals if they put their mind to it.”

Reflecting on his journey, Graham expressed gratitude to his family, friends, co-workers, and the broader community.

“The community has always been behind me,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it without their support.”
