March Break camp for goalies planned

Former OHL, WHL and pro goalie Daniel Spence heading up two-day camp at Rotary Place

If you are a local goalie looking to ‘pad’ your resume, you might want to ‘save’ the date of an upcoming goalie clinic.

A goaltending school based in Orillia and B.C., 360 Goaltending, will be hosting a two-day March Break goaltending camp at Rotary Place.

Orillia’s Daniel Spence, co-founder of the school, will be overseeing the local camp.

Spence has an impressive resume; he played for the OHL’s Sarnia Sting and the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen before playing professionally in the ECHL as well as internationally, in Sweden and Finland.

He also has 10 years of coaching experience in both North America and internationally; he has coached goalies of all ages and skill levels.

“I am very passionate about hockey and using my experiences both on and off the ice to help children and young adults become better goaltenders and better people,” said Spence.

According to the company’s website, 360 Goaltending takes an all-encompassing approach to building the foundations for the complete goalie.

“Our focus is to build on the existing strengths of the athlete both mentally and physically but also to improve on the areas that have been neglected in the past,” says the website.

“At 360 Goaltending, we take pride in being on the cutting edge of goalie coaching and athlete development. Our methods come from years of experience and mentoring with some of the best minds in the game.”

The two-day camp will be held March 11 and 12 and includes two on-ice sessions and two off-ice sessions.

There is one coach on ice for every three goalies; individual learning is stressed.

Snacks, sports drinks and prizes from sponsors are included in the $249 cost (plus taxes).

Spence and 360 Goaltending will also be hosting a summer goalie camp at Rotary Place Aug. 6-9.
